Hydrodynamic coupling of two brownian spheres to a planar surface.
We describe direct imaging measurements of the collective and relative diffusion of two colloidal spheres near a flat plate. The bounding surface modifies the spheres' dynamics, even at separations of tens of radii. This behavior is captured by a stokeslet analysis of fluid flow driven by the spheres' and wall's no-slip boundary conditions. In particular, this analysis reveals surprising asymme...
متن کاملDirect observation of hydrodynamic rotation-translation coupling between two colloidal spheres.
By combining optical tweezers with polarization microscopy, the hydrodynamic coupling between position and orientation fluctuations in a pair of colloidal spheres has been measured. Imaging of birefringent particles under crossed polarizers allows for the simultaneous determination of the positions and orientations of both particles. The temporal cross-correlation function between random displa...
متن کاملExact solutions for hydrodynamic interactions of two squirming spheres
We provide exact solutions of the Stokes equations for a squirming sphere close to a no-slip surface, both planar and spherical, and for the interactions between two squirmers, in three dimensions. These allow the hydrodynamic interactions of swimming microscopic organisms with confining boundaries, or with each other, to be determined for arbitrary separation and, in particular, in the close p...
متن کاملHydrodynamic coupling between two fluid membranes.
The coupled in-plane diffusion dynamics between point-particles embedded in stacked fluid membranes is investigated. We calculate the contributions to the coupling longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients due to particle motion within the different as well as the same membranes. The stacked geometry leads to a hydrodynamic coupling between the two membranes.
متن کاملHydrodynamic Interaction of Rough Spheres
Abstract The approach of two spheres along their line of centres is analyzed assuming that each sphere is covered by a porous layer. The slip of the fluid at the surface of the porous layers then permits the spheres to touch without a singularity in the associated force. In a corresponding analysis for flat surfaces, an analytical formula for the force is obtained. This force is also finite for...
